The Water Still Decides

Water

The moon pulls, the tide answers, and still nothing is settled. What comes back can look certain from a distance and mean something else entirely. “The Water Still Decides” turns on that small difference.

The Water Still Decides

By Kerry Ann Wiley

The moon can pull at water.
The water still decides.

It comes close enough to listen,
then leaves the moon to guess.

It can pull the whole world closer,
slip past the reach of light,
then turn where moonlight falls away.

Only the pull,
the space between,
and what the distance leaves.

Some things come close without staying.
Some things leave and still return.

Let the clocks insist they’re right.

No promise in the turning.
No answer in the tide.

Return can be
another kind of leaving.

The tide turns.

It proves nothing else.

The moon can pull at water.
The water still decides.

The tide turns. What looked certain from a distance looks different up close. The pull remains, and so does the distance.
