First published in July 2022, this essay is revisited in 2026 to consider questions that remain relevant to everyday participation. Entering a building, accessing information, and joining an activity may appear straightforward, but each experience depends on how access is provided.
The essay examines the relationship between accessibility, choice, and communication. A usable entrance is important, but participation also involves understanding what is taking place, making decisions, and having meaningful ways to contribute.
Revisiting the essay offers an opportunity to consider how spaces, information, and activities are organized, and whether they accommodate different ways of participating. The original examples remain useful for examining these questions in 2026.
